Man who shot dead Cambridgeshire father and son has sentence increased

A man who shot dead a father and son in Cambridgeshire has had his sentence increased following an appeal by the Crown Prosecution Service.

John Smith, 45, was originally sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murders of James and David Johnson in 2018. However, after reviewing the case, the CPS argued that this was not sufficient given the severity of the crimes.

Following a successful appeal, Smith’s sentence has now been increased to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 30 years. The presiding judge described the murders as “utterly senseless and brutal” and stated that a harsher sentence was necessary to reflect the gravity of the offences.

The Johnson family has expressed relief at the decision, hoping that it will bring them some level of closure after the tragic loss of their loved ones. They have thanked the CPS for their diligence in pursuing a longer sentence for Smith.

Smith has shown no remorse for his actions and it is hoped that the increased sentence will serve as a deterrent to others who may consider committing similar crimes in the future.

Overall, the decision to increase John Smith’s sentence sends a strong message that violent crimes will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
